Light Boxes as a Design Element in a Historic Building

Hirschburg — Vodafone Germany

As part of the redesign of the Hirschburg’s event and relaxation spaces, Spalek was commissioned to design and realise a bespoke lighting solution. The aim was to integrate modern lighting accents harmoniously into the building’s historic architecture while allowing flexible use of the spaces.

Two custom-made light boxes with translucent membranes were produced and flush-mounted into the ceiling. The light surfaces are fitted with RGBW LEDs, allowing both neutral white task lighting and a range of colour ambiences. The lighting is dimmable and can be flexibly adjusted to different usage scenarios — from functional illumination to atmospheric lighting installations for events.

Control is available both via conventional wall switches and through the Philips Hue system. Light colour, intensity and lighting scenes can be easily set and saved individually. This system offers great flexibility of use, intuitive control and the ability to adapt or expand lighting atmospheres at any time without structural intervention.

Alongside the light boxes, the surrounding ceiling areas were realised with a white satin stretch ceiling. This surface creates a calm, homogeneous overall appearance while compensating for irregularities and microcracks in the building structure. The satin finish integrates discreetly into the historic architecture and reinforces the clean, refined aesthetic of the space.

Through the combination of modern lighting technology, smart control and precise custom manufacturing, the project achieves a successful balance of functionality and design — respecting the historic character of the Hirschburg while adding a contemporary touch.
